Treatment Planning and Interventions · Working with Shame

Stay With It

Six moments where shame arrives in the room and you have to say something next, then three presentations and the chair technique each one calls for, if any.

What this exercise practises

Recognising shame as it presents somatically and cognitively, and responding in the sequence Section 6.4 sets out rather than in the sequence that is most comfortable for the clinician.

Most of the wrong answers here are kind. That is what makes them difficult to hear in your own voice.

Question 1 of 9

The client stops mid-sentence. What do you say?

A client in her second session is describing her first sexual relationship. Part way through a sentence she trails off, looks at the floor, and her voice drops. She does not finish the sentence.
