Sound and Unsound Inference
Six clinical statements. For each, decide whether the inference drawn about the client's arousal is sound or unsound. Genital response and subjective arousal are separate systems, and most of the errors in this area come from treating one as evidence of the other.
The Rule
Do not infer subjective arousal from reports of genital response. Do not infer the absence of arousal from the absence of genital response. Always assess subjective experience directly, using language that distinguishes physiological response from subjective desire.
